Jose Wonka and the Chocolate Farm

Hi to all, we are passing back through town on our way back from the organic farm, so we are getting in a quick blog while we can. Sorry, no pictures today since we do not have time to edit all the pictures. Everyone is doing great - the day was very educational for the students and adults. Franklin is our student blogger and will give you all the details. The students are doing a little souvenir hunting while we get this blog in. Tonight is dinner early by the beach hopefully around 5 before it gets dark. Our flight out is at noon tomorrow and we hope to go downtown in San Jose to the central market after we check in to the hotel. We will post a full blog, unfortunately our last, in the evening.

Our best to all of you,

CB out

Salutations! It is Franklin blogging from Puerto Jimenez. I am going to talk about our adventures here on the Osa Peninsula from last night and today. Last night after dinner, instead of a game, we had a wonderful talent show. There were several acts, including singing, and magic tricks. We then stargazed for a bit, and Mr. Dankenbring told us about some of the stars. We then cleaned up and went to bed. We all woke up this morning and had our breakfast consisting of pancakes, eggs, sausage, and an assortment of fruit. We then relaxed for a bit before we all hopped on to our bus and headed to Finca Kobo Farm. The farm consisted of secondary and primary forests as well as farmland. We were greeted by our guide for the day, Alex, and headed offf to the fields. While we were walking to our first destination, Alex spotted a boa constrictor in a compost pile about 30 feet away. We took a few pictures of it and continued on to our first destination. The first area we visited was a small area consisting of fruit trees and herbs, and we smelled and tasted them. While in that area, we learned that organic pineapples take 14 months to grow, while nonorganic take 9. The chemicals and pesticides used in nonorganic pineapple slice the growing time by 5 months, but can cause cancer. We then moved to a forest consisting of cacao trees, along with many other vegetation, including a giant ficus. Alex told us about the vegetation and animals in the area, and gave us a brief history of the cacao trees. We then continued along the dirt trail, which eventually moved into the open, and saw some more cacao trees, and got a chance to taste the beans. After this, we moved to an area in which Aex showed us the process that produces chocolate. We then moved back to the main building and had a snack of various fruits and chocolate sauce, which was muy delicioso. After this, we departed from the farm and headed to town which is where I am now.

Hi dad and Leah, mom and I are doing great and we are both safe. We both miss you and love you and cannot wait to see you when we get back. I hope Fallon is doing okay, also. See you soon! Adios everyone!

  2. Hello to Cate and everyone,
It is sunny here in Naples but I understand the weather is not so nice in Cincy. Thanks to Franklin for his informative blog. I may never eat pineapple again and if I do I'm sticking to the organic product. Thank you to all of the adults for making this an amazing experience for my grandaughter and for keeping her safe. Especialy from the former owner of the property. Cate I hope you were able to recover your homework. If not you will have a good excuse.I will talk to you soon

  3. Rand,
Snakes and Chocolate!! You must be in paradise!! I bet the fresh pineapple tastes really good, too. I met with my P2P students today - we are excited about our upcoming trip to the Rain Forest in Australia. I told them about your blog and they are excited to discover their own RF adventures. Here's one to groan about...
There where two snakes talking on the compost pile.
The 1st one said 'Jose, are we the type of snakes who wrap ourselves around our prey and squeeze and crush until they're dead? Or are we the type of snake who ambush our prey and bite them and they are poisoned?'.
Then the second Snake says "Why do you ask?"
The 1st one replies: "I just bit my lip!"

I know you probably hate to see your adventure end. I just can't imagine how much fun this has been for you and your friends. You all have shared so much over the past 10 days. I'll bet you will be friends forever. Who else do you know that wakes up to howler monkerys, sees boa constrictors close by, holds poisonous frogs and zips though the jungle??!! I do know it has not ALL been paradise! I've seen the pictures of you all doing homework. Aaackkk!!! We will be happy to see you soon. I want to meet you at the airport but I have to work Monday evening.
:( Have fun, make good memories, be safe. Know we love you!!

  10. To Pepe (AKA Joe) Kanitz:

Did you get a picture of that boa constrictor? Wow!

Aunt Kathleen said Uncle Tim is jealous and wants to come down there. She also told us that years ago Grandpa wanted to retire in Costa Rica, but he couldn't talk Grandma into it.

Tomorrow is your last full day in CR so have a great one! Practice some more Spanish in San Jose if you can. Bring back some CR coffee for your Mom. Dad says get lots of unique souvenirs that reflect your adventures.

We are really excited to see you Monday! This may be our last note to you (??) before you depart. Hope the trip back is as nice as the one that got you there. We are all excited to see you soon!

XXOOXX! Buenos dias, Mom and Dad

  15. Hi Mark and Tom,
I'm sure you're sad to see the trip end- safe travels back home. We'll look forward to hearing the trip details in person, hopefully sometime soon. Michael had an 8 hour drive from Kansas City to St. Louis yesterday due to snow and Mizzou lost so it was kind of a gloomy day! It's supposed to be sunny and 60 tomorrow though, so Spring time is here. Wishing you smooth flights with no delays!
    Love,
    Aunt Jane/Jane

Can't wait to see you and hear all your experiences!

Safe travels on your last day. Hopefully you have found some memorables to bring home--if not at least you will have great memories (and I hope great photos). If you get a chance don't forget the coffee.
The blog entries have all been great---gave us something to look forward to each day.
THANK YOU again to the chaperones, CB and the Morgan's for making this such a wonderful experience. As everyone has posted so many times before this was a trip that the kids will remember all their lives--thanks for making it happen!
Enjoy the rest of the trip.
