Osa...Flora...Fauna

Well, I’m back at the Palms right now. Today has been one of the hottest days we’ve had, although right now a raincloud is rolling straight into the bay. Probably sunny and dry at the lodge…Gary, Jerry, Sean, and Joe are all in town with me -- running errands and getting our dinner. It’s a surprise for the students – pizza! Oops, power just went out in town…back on again. Close call for the blog.

Today was our educational interactive day at Morgan’s Jungle Lodge. The day started for me with a beach walk at 5 am where I came upon a group of howler monkeys in the palm trees. Then I was joined by some chaperones and a couple of students for an expedition to gather some fishing bait. The rest of the troups were sleeping in a bit and resting up from our last 3 adventures. After breakfast, the students spent two hours on their homework packets, and then before lunch they participated in scientific observations of the 700 year old fichus tree and nature trail here on the property. The afternoon is being spent further working on homework and resting up – siesta time for some who need it.

We’ve seen some great plants and animals over the last few days, so we’ve gathered up many of them from all of our cameras and are showing them to you today. The below photos are what this trip is all about. Enjoy.

Tomorrow morning will be a short beach walk followed by a bus trip to Iguana Lodge for lunch and exploring the sandy beach up there.

The comments are getting better and better !! ..can’t believe we have over 1600 unique group or individuals following this blog. I’ll make rock stars out of these students yet…

P.S. if anyone needs to contact us for any reason, you can call Jerry’s phone at 513-673-9902

Here's today's video bloggers -- Abby and Cameron. They made this in one take -- I was blown away. If any talent scouts see this we may have to get them agents...

Now here’s an update from the lodge in-house physician, Dr Jose Hellman:

From Dr. J

Buenos Dias from the Osa. Day #5 at the Guanabana Lodge is another beautiful day with a light breeze and lots of sun. The group just finished almuerzo of gallo pinto, jamon e queso sandwiches, fresh fruit and more. Everybody has been eating great commensurate with the high level of activity. After three days of snorkeling, horseback riding, and creek hiking, today is a planned low key recovery day to lick the wounds. The students worked hard on school work this morning with curious capuchin monkeys 5 feet overhead and noisy Macaw birds higher. At times the monkeys would drop sticks to get attention from the studious kids. Mr. L. then proctored a study of a huge 700 year old fichus tree while Mr. D, Mr. J and I had an unsuccessful attempt to catch dinner from the sea in a kayak and a canoe

Report Medica from Dr Jose or in the language of Mr. J. El Doc-toro. I am happy to report overall everyone is doing great, (healthy and happy). Lots of minor scraps, blisters and sunburns. As mentioned, this afternoon the kids are taking it easy. Hydration and hygiene are repeatedly reiterated. Cameron gets the award for biggest heel blisters that are now healing beautifully. The few with minor over sun exposure include, Ryan, Joe K, Cameron, Alex, Danielle, and Abby, with Anna taking the prize. All are out of the sun today with lots of lotion and hydration. Most band aids used goes to Max. Loudest scream was from Danielle at the sight of harmless Halloween crab in her tent. MK is feeling much better after a mild off day yesterday. All the students are in good spirits without being homesick. As we all do, Mr. L misses his spouse and daughters and shows us the pictures his wife sent to open each day

I am very proud of each and every one of the students. They really watch out for each other and unconditionally include everybody in every activity. NO DRAMA.

Finally, Abby and I miss our family terribly and are very appreciative for the sacrifices you have made to allow us to come on this trip. Grace, you are La Commandera in Abbys absence. Be nice to your sisters. Claire, I hope you are over the strep and feeling better. Emma, I miss your smile. Keep helping mom. Gwen, I can not wait to get back and read the night time books with you. Karol, I miss you and think of you before any dangerous extra curricular adult activity Mr. D is trying to get me into. Keep blogging, It is nice for Abby and I to hear from you. Hasta luego for now.

Love Dr. J and Abby

  8. Hello Everyone... Mrs. CB here,
Awesome pics and videos - what talent you all possess. Keep up the good work - it's awesome!

I know you all realize that Miss Pater is a huge supporter of this program and each of you. Mrs. McBrayer sent an email out yesterday to let us all know that Miss Pater’s recovery has been hampered by an illness that requires on-going hospitalization. Please keep her in your prayers. I know she can't wait to hear all your wonderful stories and see your many photos.

Ryan - I can't wait to hear from you. Seems like an eternity since I heard your voice. I miss your daily stories. It's way too quiet here in the morning without you once Sam leaves for school. Only Chloe is left to keep me company.

We're starting to count the days till you return. We love & miss you both more than you can imagine.

    Hey Joe!

Working hard or hardly working? We can tell from your big smiles that you are having a great time. We are excited to hear about the "MONKEY ENCOUNTER" and the many adventures. Hope you used the underwater camera on snorkeling day. Bet that was something! I am saving all the blog pictures for you.

Aunt Peggy had a little trouble sending a comment - she says hello and you should hear from her soon. She is showing everything to Grandma and cousins too.

Here's what's new: Bill got his braces off (hurray!), he agrees with you that Mr. Feely is funny, Julie is busy studying for finals and getting ready for a school play, Bill and Brian started baseball, we took them to a dinosaur movie and show at the Museum (Dad thought you'd like it), tomorrow is "pajama day" at school, and both the cookie supply and peanut butter jar remain mostly unchanged in your absence. (Evidence!)

Don't worry about a purple and lime bedroom - Julie was only kidding. We know how you like pink (haha).

Remember all the things I (Mom) told you to remember - you know what they are. We love you very much!

The video was hysterical.....I think that Abby & Cameron may be able to give some of those kids on the Disney Channel a run for their money. Thanks to all of the adults for everything "extra" you are doing to make this such a wonderful experience for all of the students.....Cate...we love seeing your smiling face everyday on the blog and miss you loads....I really, really hope that wasn't your hand holding the posionous frog....He wasn't nearly so cute as the one from yesterday! I absolutely can't wait to hear all about every single last detail!! All is well here. The dogwoods and daffodils are blooming. You'll definitely be returning home to Spring! We are working hard on Smith's event and could have used some of your artistic talent this week as we put together the program....but, your brother has learned a few tricks from you and managed to pull it together on his own. xoxo....kind of love you.....like a lot!! Are you getting enough sleep? Are the howler monkeys still cute? Kinda of ironic that on "vacation" you get up earlier than you do on a regular school day. The trials and tribulations of paradise!
The daily blog entries continue to not disappoint the viewer! The pictures look amazing. Do they have fire-belly frogs in Costa Rica? Remember Nate's frog??
I can't wait to read/hear your blog comments! Take lots of pictures - don't forget to get a few with you in them!! Did you get the St. X picture yet?
I really miss having another girl in the house. The boys are really only interested in what's for dinner. They could care less about my new shoes. (Which are really cute btw!)

All I can say is WOW!!! I'm truly impressed with all the pictures and stories. I'm so glad to hear the medical report and that all are doing quite well. Also glad to hear that you took a day off to recoup and rehydrate. Danielle, love the loudest scream award... Only wonder who would have won if both you and your mom walked into find the nice surprise. CB - excellent updates... Glad to see that you're all getting a first-hand, real-world education. I don't know how you're going to top the pictures from today. Here's a couple jokes to share:

    Dumb monkey
Why did the first monkey fall out of the tree?
    Because it died.
Why did the second monkey fall out of the tree?
Because it was holding hands with the first monkey

why did the third monkey fall out of the tree?

because it thought they were playing a game!

    hahahahahahah

    MATH
What's the cutest thing in math?

    Answer: An acute angle.

and in honor of the local fishing expedition:

    TWO MEN WENT FISHING

Two Morons rent a rowboat, row out a way, throw their lines in and try fishing. Nothing happens. One fellow says to the other, we have to row out away from shore into deep water. They row and row offshore about one mile out, try fishing again. Same thing nothing. The same fellow says we have to go really far out that's where the fish are. They row for an hour. They are so far out they can not see land. They try again. low and behold they hit a bananza. There is no rest. Fish after fish is caught one fellow says to the other. You know we can come back tomorrow catch another load of fish and make some money selling it. His friend says that's a great idea but how are we going to find this same spot. His friend thinks about it a moment then says we could mark an X on the side of the boat. His friend looks at him a moment says OK. As they are rowing back toward shore his friend gives him a dirty look and says that wasn't such a good idea marking an X on the side of the boat. How do you know if we'll get the same boat tomorrow?

Anyway, I looked for squirrels to chase today-no luck. I think they don't like the rain.

Dad took down a sparrow nest in the light on the porch and I didn't even get to sniff it-what's up with that?

Dad showed me som of the pictures of you-and you're smiling in all but two-what's up with that?

I told Dad to cancel soccer today-too wet-and if the girls all got home with wet paws they's have to sleep in their kennels. What's up with that?

I have a short attention span............

I am so thankful that through your learning, my first graders get to experience something they have never seen before...Thanks!

  46. I was thinking about the Howlers and wondering if anyone has videotaped the sound they make? I remember being in the country Turkey, and being startled at 4:30 am when the Iman broadcasted the morning prayer from the top of the mosque’s minaret. After a couple of nights of waking up to this unexpected sound, I was able to sleep through it as it became the “music” of the country and was quite soothing. I wonder if you are soothed by the music of the rain forest? Will the Howlers “music” be etched in your memory like the Iman’s prayers are etched in mine? Do you hear the many bird calls? What a magical place to listen to nature’s music!

The frog pictures – TOADally awesome!
