Underwater Snorkeling Adventure

Hi everybody! This is CB and Jerry in the town of Puerto Jimenez sending the blog today. We switched internet café’s to the Palms, scene of the 2007 blogging adventure. The view is better here – looking out over the bay … well, look at the picture…you can see why Jerry volunteered to be assistant blogger!

Yesterday was a great day – we finally wore out the students enough that they went to bed early and slept in until the howlers at 5. The highlight of our evenings is dinner together and reading YOUR comments! It’s an interesting way for us to communicate – we send pictures and you send all those great words of encouragement. Last night us chaperones watched the students play movie charades – classic fun and nobody was shy.

The snorkeling tour was fantastic – the American boat captain, Bob, took us across the Golfo Dulce to a secluded bay that had a beautiful beach, palm trees, and a reef teaming with interesting underwater creatures. The students donned their life jackets and snorkeling gear for over 1 and a half hours in the water. Then our guide from the creek walk, Adonis, gathered up some coconuts and cut them open for all to drink coconut milk and eat the fruit inside. Adonis brought his son, Akillian, 15 years old, and the students interacted with him in Spanish for most of the day. Akillian did not need a life jacket and dove to the bottom of the reef to scare out some colorful fish and retrieve shells, starfish, and coral. The kids then had lunch and ate about twice what they normally would eat. Everything we brought was gone! Then we went up a river lined with mangroves and saw a crocodile – it was easily startled and dove into the deep muddy water. On the way back, we jammed to reggae music and the kids danced. It was an awesome day on the water!

Well just another day in the Osa…Tomorrow is our interactive day at Morgan’s Guanabana Lodge. We hope to catch up on our blog with all the creatures and plants that we have been observing over the first half of the trip. Everyone is happy and healthy – keep them comments coming!!!

Jerry and CB out

Here’s today’s student video bloggers – Anna and Randy!

  2. Alex ... wow snorkeling looks fantastic! You guys are really "experiencing" a different way of life. Climb those trees, get that food (coconuts), and then prepare to eat it. (How did that coconut taste .. by the way?)

How different is that from what we are experiencing now .. using blog technology to communicate. We love reading your adventures .. almost like being there, especially with the pictures and video.

Looking forward to more "Costa Rican adventures of the SMS crew" ... Grandma and Grandpa "W"

  4. Hey Everyone... Mrs. CB here-
What great videos and photos. Ryan, I especially love the frog you're holding. You know what a sucker I am for frogs! They're so cute.

So did you jam to "Video killed the radio star" on the boat ride? I can remember listening to that song about a thousand times from the trip two years ago.

How about the coconut milk? Did you like it? Hopefully only your island friend climbed the tree to pull down the coconuts.

I have to say, this would be my favorite part of the trip... floating in the water, listening to the tunes, and soaking in the sun. You're so lucky!

Sam, Chloe and I continue to hold down the fort. We miss you more each day and look forward to your photos every evening.

Grandma & Grandpa K say "hello" too. Grandma's hoping for another frog or turtle like the one Sam brought home two years ago from the gift shop near the airport in Puerto Jimenez.

We're on our way out to Skyline... our first night out! Aren't you proud of me Gary? I've been cooking for the two of us since you left. We decided it was time to take a break.

Enjoy your evening as well... all our love, take care, Kim, Sam & Chloe

Hi Abby and Joe, the pictures today are incredible! Joe, you must have loved being on a boat all day...although probably not fast enough to ski! Abby you look a little pink! Make sure you load up on the sunscreen...especially on your face...and shoulders! Busy week here, hosting the gymnastics team for movie nt. on Fri! Grace is getting very excited for NYC. Joe, I was relieved to see pics of you today...wasn't 100% sure you were still there! Ha! We miss you like crazy! Wish we were there!

  8. Hello Annie and everyone! Loved the video blog. Good to hear your voice, Annie. FYI-an ice cream man is a street vendor! It looks like you lived to talk about it so I won't worry. We love all the pictures. You are all having some great experiences. Life has not been dull at school, but I'd rather be snorkeling. NIck is sick-missed school today-but seems to be on the mend. We love you and are looking forward to tomorrow's blog!

CB you have out done yourself this year!!! The blog is amazing. Maybe you are spending too much time at the Palms? Don't corrupt Jerry.

Emily, I found Madison wandering around your room today. I guess she misses you too. The boys finally went out and got the new TV. You will love it. Spent the afternoon with Virginia. She was very excited to hear about your trip. I am sure you had a blast today on the boat and in the water. Love you more!!

  10. Sea snake??? Eel??? Cate.... I never thought I'd say that I was actually happy to see you with that cute little baby frog on your arm!! Great job once again by CB, assistant B, Annie & Randy. Everything looks absolutely fanatastic, but, I would think that one of the coolest things had to be getting to speak in Spanish with Akillian all day. Your dad is on his way home early this week because there is so much snow in Denver he can't even get there!! So he will be blogging to you hopefully by this evening.....we love you lots and lots and as you know.....we love you like crazy!! xoxo Mom, Lolo & Smith (who is downstairs cramming for Accelerated Chem....maybe pray for him a little tonight.)

  12. Hello, All --

It looks like another magnificent day, filled with adventure, fun, beauty, and memories! How fortunate you are! I cannot wait to hear the stories!

The blog and the video are a highlight of each day. They are entertaining and informative. Thank you for taking the time to create them and to do such a top-notch job! Your personalities shine, which is especially nice to see each day.

The eighth graders wanted to send back a video via the blog, showing you all the exciting or not so exciting things that are happening here! Can you see it now?! They wanted to create it in class the other day since they were working on taking and editing video. Mostly, I think they missed you and sought to let you know that.

So, today was frog and boat day, eh? I'm envious! The pictures are priceless!

What has been your most memorable moment to this point? Would anyone we have not heard from so far like to chime in?

Life goes on as usual here so signing out for now... looking forward to tomorrow .. enjoy every experience ...

    Adios,
    Mrs. B.

Hey Cam! Looks like another boring day of learning! =) I have always wanted to go snorkeling! I can't wait to hear about what you saw. Did you get to ski behind the boat? I bet you wanted to!

I told my first graders about your trip and they thought it was awesome! A lot of them had silly questions for you, most dealing with the monkeys...probably because they can relate to acting like them! =D My class won a lunch from Olive Garden, so we are having that on Thursday. They wanted you to come in and talk about your trip and have lunch with us…I told them you were too far away. They have a hard time understanding that concept. We are just trying to find OHIO on the map right now! =)

I miss you tons! I’m getting the itch for a round of golf and some Skyline…you in?

    Until next time hermano! =D

    Love,
    Ashley

Okay, we just have to ask...what is the deal with Adonis taking a header down the coconut tree? Did he mean to do that or was it accidental?
The teeny little frogs were cute, but I was not too thrilled to read about the crocodile (just kidding!) I will just have to hold my breath until after the crocodile swamp tour...
Cam: Looks like another great day in paradise - you were really in your element in the water and on the boat, weren't you? The highlight of each day for your Dad and me is to read the blog and see what you all have been up to. Really love seeing all of the pictures. Thanks to CB (and Mini-me-B) for the great job they are doing. It is greatly appreciated.
Dad and I miss you like crazy -- hope you are having the time of your life. We can't wait to see you and hear all about it.
Take care of each other and stay safe.

  22. Hi Sean! This is Kristen, sending you a shout out from good old Cincinnati! We went to your parents for dinner tonight (its only natural they cooked, who would want to eat my cooking anyway?). And Lucy was busting a serious groove to the Blues Brothers cd your dad put on. And when we left she was whining a little and said, "miss daddy in tosta rica," and it about broke my heart. So when she wakes up in the morning I will show her the new pictures on the blog, she loves seeing you and all the kids. Baby Emma, Lucy and I are doing just fine, Charlie is loving being outside so much, it has been nice and warm...though not as beautiful or adventurous as it sounds there in the jungle/rainforest....oh and I can't wait for you to hear Lucy say "osa peninsula" because it is hilarious and has about 15 extra syllables she puts in there. It was so good to hear your voice today, it really lifted my spirits, I am just missing talking with you so much! Have a wonderful time and take lots of pictures and enjoy every minute! We love you and miss you so much!

I just read Nate's post...your room was a challenge, but maybe not that bad. Although the rug is visable again! I have discovered that you have WAY TOO MANY CLOTHES! You will find a surprise in your room when you arrive home other than the rug! I think you will like it....where can we get that paint???
I love the blog entries from all the travelers. Every one has been priceless to those of us at home. Along with the pictures, I almost feel as though I am there with you.
So, MK am I to believe that you are up at 5am every morning? We never thought we would see the day!! Can someone make an audio of the howlers for us to replace the alarm clock for MK?
I love the bathing beauties on the boat. You guys are all doing great and obviously having the time of your life! Enjoy Wednesday! I can't wait to read all about it.
    Love you oodles! Mom

What an awesome scene though seeing all of you on the boat and in life jackets and snorkeling gear. I'm so happy to see that everyone is having a great adventure. Also looks like the chaperones are even a bit more relaxed than when they left. I can't wait to hear more of the stories when everyone returns. I hope we're planning on another potluck to share all the adventures. It's getting a bit lonely around the house without you! Can't wait to see you next Monday.
